Epilogue: “If you can’t beat ‘em..” The zombie horde was last seen west of Barstow, shuffling towards Los Angeles and devouring everything in its path. A comprehensive post-mortem of the Four Corners battlefield revealed no signs of life. No Apple, no Ducky, no Brucie... no nuthin’. Facts are rare and rumors rampant in the wake of war but there has been one particularly disturbing report from the recently overrun Marine Corps base in Barstow. I was conducting a camera support review for “The Overland Journal” in Monument Valley and had asked my friend Gilbert to tag along. I told him that if he brought his cool little 1/64th scale Sherman tank model I would make him a nice forced perspective image of it “in action”. Gilbert had wandered off somewhere, and I was deeply absorbed in getting the perfect combination of focal length and camera-to-subject distance, when I was suddenly scared witless by cute French tourist giggling just over my shoulder. “Zis tank must be ze bwavest of all ze tanks to be so leetle in such a beeg place!” She cooed. “Uhm... erm....Yes! Yes, he must!!”, I cried. “His enemies are very large and very many and arriving very soon! You must save yourself!! Run!!! Run away!!!!” Playing along, the girl squealed happily and dashed away. 🤣 I can only imagine how she has since related the chance encounter with the crazy American and his tiny tank - and all those cameras... Forced-perspective photography is a great in-camera technique and totally convincing when you get it right. I attempted three different set-ups in the production of my “Bad Apple” adventure series and ended up using two. Try it! As Apple’s last rocket dispatched the enemy commander’s Tiger Tank in an impressive fireball, my lucky lob lit up another fat fuel truck and for a brief moment the entire valley was illuminated in a spooky warm glow. “Uh-oh”, we gasped simultaneously. Rather than a handful of tanks on the run, we saw an entire expeditionary force of zombie Marines – and they were all shuffling directly towards us!! I couldn’t speak for Apple, but I sure as heck hoped Ducky had a plan for THIS nightmare. Chapter Five: “Apocalypse Meow” Ducky, practically swimming in Apple’s too-huge flak jacket, crawled to the lip of a deep arroyo about 50 meters ahead. Through a series of tiny and almost imperceptible gestures, she signaled that the enemy platoon commander’s Tiger was sneaking right into our trap. He had spotted me on the ridge and taken the bait. I hate being the bait. As Ducky scuttled back to load Apple’s last rocket, I stuffed another kiss of H.E.A.T. into the breech of my Sherman’s sizzling 75 and prayed the Tiger’s 88 didn’t bite me first. “Burn bright, Tiger”, Apple purred softly as she stalked her prey... Chapter Four: “Tanks? You’re Welcome!” Ducky, Apple’s doll baby, seems to be a full partner in this bizarre duo and her vote clearly carries much more weight than mine. Ducky apparently felt we should attack immediately so that’s exactly what we did. While clearly quite mad, Apple is proving to be a helluva shot. Must’ve been a decent pool shooter back in The World coz she played the sandstone cushions like a Southside Chicago pro. Took out the fuel truck and reduced two tanks to molten metal with a single rocket! Impressive. The terrified crew of the third tank bailed out and was last seen hightailing it over the eastern horizon. Sure, the abandoned tank smelled like a bin of over-ripe diapers when I squeezed in but I didn’t care. I finally had myself a proper tinfoil hat. And a very big gun. I slammed a round of H.E.A.T. into the cannon’s breech, jammed the controls forward, and dropped in to cover the crazy ladies’ six. Chapter Three: Duck This! “Call me Apple”, she growled under the shrill ringing in my ears. “Sure, great... Apple it is. Call me Brucie.” “How ‘bout we jump that fuel truck driver and grab the next tank that rolls up for a drink? Snag us a ride under some nice fat armor... blend into their platoon and start picking off stragglers?” I shouted over the din of incoming artillery rounds. Apple stared into the darkness for what seemed like an eternity and then slowly shouldered the bazooka. “Ducky thinks we should light ‘em ALL up”, she finally muttered. The 1Dx MKIII, in Video Mode, is capable of recording up to 5.5K Raw video at speeds as high as 60 frames per second. Each of those Raw video frames is a potential 15.79 megapixel 16x9 still image just waiting to be extracted and adjusted in Canon’s free DPP Raw image processing software. These frames were grabbed from a video we shot for Buddy Blaze Guitars. They were intended to be dark and sketchy. Can you think of a shooting situation that would benefit from such a fast capture rate? I sure can! In my capacity as a Canon Explorer of Light, I recently had a chance to test a pre-release sample of the new Canon EOS 1D X Mark III. It is, for lack of a more effusive word, spectacular.
